Raynaud’s Phenomenon

Do your fingers & toes ever become cold, numb, painful and change colour?

If yes, then you may be suffering from ‘Raynaud’s Phenomenon’.

But don’t panic just yet!

Raynaud’s is a common condition thought to affect up to 10 million people in the UK.

The condition affects the blood vessels in the body’s extremities (fingers & toes).

The image shows the subtle changes to the colour of the skin and nail. You may notice these changes at this time of year.

In our podiatry clinic we advise you take note of the temperature drop in the Autumn and Winter months and dress appropriately.

How to treat Raynaud’s…

The best thing to do is remember to wrap up warm, wearing a hat, scarf, gloves, warm socks and good footwear.

Certain types of materials in gloves and socks can also help, such as the natural fibres found in Bamboo socks that help to keep your feet warm in the winter months.

We also notice an increased incidence of Raynaud’s with  patients who wear thin slip on shoes that do not provide adequate protection from the cold pavements and prevailing winds. Thicker soled shoes are preferable.

Plastazote is an insulating foam which when worn inside shoes helps to trap body heat in, preventing feet from getting ice cold.

There are also moisturising balms you can apply to your skin prior to going outdoors which contain extract of chilli to warm the skin, which some people find helpful.
