The History of Paraffin Wax in Podiatry

Paraffin Wax treatments were introduced during the First World War by a French Physician, but can be traced back to biblical times and the Roman Empire.

The treatment benefits multiple ailments including plantar fasciitis, joint pain, arthritis and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

How Wax Works

The wax helps to moisturise and soften the skin while providing a therapeutic and healing effect for sore and aching joints. Increased tolerance to pain and muscle relaxtion can also make it particularly beneficial for those suffering from arthritis and rheumatic pain.

Paraffin Wax heat therapy increases blood flow, sweat and sebum production thus allowing beneficial nutrients to be drawn to the skins cells that rejuvenate the skin.

In the prestigious Elizabeth Arden health resort clients were offered ‘Wax baths’ for their whole body.

Wax Therapy In Foot Care

Warm paraffin wax has been used as standard foot care in podiatry for many years but became less popular (as in the beauty industry) due to clinical cross contamination.

Traditionally, the baths were difficult to sterilise and could incubate bacteria.

What Is The Answer?

In our practice we use a revolutionary ‘Orb’ the gold standard in paraffin wax treatments, that allows for a reduction in cross infection with a single use pot for each patient.

After nail care, corn and hard skin removal the podiatrist will massage oil into your feet. Next warm paraffin wax is slowly brushed over aching joints and dry areas of skin. The feet are wrapped up to aid the absorption of the oils into the epidermis. The wax is gently pulled away to reveal fresh, revitalised beautiful feet. An indulgent addition to any foot treatment.

Ask your Podiatrist the next time you visit the clinic, or have a look at our price list if you want to treat yourself or a loved one.
